      Dog Breeds :: English Foxhound

    General Appearance
    Skull--should be of full size, but by no means heavy. Brow pronounced, but not high or sharp. There should be a good length and breadth, sufficient to give in a dog hound a girth in front of the ears of fully 16 inches. The nose should be long (4½ inches) and wide, with open nostrils. Ears set on low and lying close to the cheeks. Most English hounds are ''rounded'' which means that about 1½ inches is taken off the end of the ear. The teeth must meet squarely, either a pig-mouth (overshot) or undershot being a disqualification.

    Owning
    The English Foxhound's coat is short, hard, and glossy and comes in colors of black, tan, and white or any combination. The English Foxhound needs exercise. He is happiest with those who live in rural areas or on large farms. Foxhounds enjoy the company of other dogs and can become bored if kept alone. The English Foxhound is an intelligent, courageous pack-hound with a cheerful determined disposition.

    Did you know?
    The first AKC registered English Foxhound was named ''Auditor.'' Auditor was registered in 1909. 31 English Foxhounds were registered with the AKC in 1995. 8 English Foxhounds earned the CH title in 1995, 10 in 1994, and 10 in 1993.

    AKC Recommends
    The American Kennel Club recommends that anyone interested in a breed should take the time to thoroughly learn about that breed, talk to responsible and knowledgeable breeders and seek out the resources of the AKC national club formed by individuals devoted to preserving and protecting their breed for future generations. The AKC offers links to the official national Club of this breed - the club's officers, breeder referral, and breed rescue contact persons.
